Learning Objectives

1) Knowledge and understanding

  • Knowing models and methodologies typical of the pediatric area, as well as the main diseases of infancy to model the educational and training events to the needs of each child for the well-being and psychophysical health
  • To know how to interpret and manage the relational and situational dynamics between the child and his peers, parents and other family members in domestic and educational settings
  • To possess the knowledge to facilitate learning processes and more in general cognitive processes in children with typical and atypical development
  • To know the principles of integrated management of interventions dedicated to childhood, public health services and organizations (national health system, clinical centers of first, second and third level) and private (clinics, private clinics) in a multispecialist and multi-professional approach of increasing complexity

2) Knowledge and applied understanding skills. Skills: application of knowledge

  • To connect the theoretical and methodological contents learned to the interpretation of events that may affect and / or compromise the child's health conditions, his behavior, his relationships or the environment in which he lives
  • Knowing how to carry out research aimed at practical intervention through the use of national and international databases in the bio-medical field (eg PubMed, Scopus, Google Schoolar, etc).
  • Knowing how to intervene in the relational dynamics that have the child as a protagonist, using methods and tools to manage situations that arise in educational practice
  • Knowing how to monitor and evaluate the different developmental trajectories of the child (motor, language, sensory, relational and behavioral) and growth, knowing how to grasp the differences between the typical and atypical development of the child
  • Knowing how to collaborate in the definition of organizational and public health policies concerning the complex world of childhood.
  • To promote an effective integration between educational, social, cultural services and those in the pediatric-health area.

3) Autonomy of judgment. Skills: Synthesize and evaluate

  • To critically evaluate the relevance of the theoretical contents studied with respect to what is observed in the child or in his life contexts in educational practice
  • Knowing how to choose appropriate management and care methods and tools, taking into account the needs of the child and its developmental stages, whether regular or not.
  • Knowing how to organize and manage complex problems and information, especially when the child has a chronic disorder highly complex to manage

4) Communication skills; Knowing how to communicate

  • Knowing how to deal with interlocutors, specialists and non-specialists, within design interventions and various professional contexts
  • Knowing how to draw up reports and protocols, be able to describe clinical cases, report with language properties what is observed in the child or critical events that occurred during educational practice interacting with parents, clinical specialists and other work colleagues.

5) Learning skills

  • Improve skills to contribute to the development of projects also in the clinical field
  • Knowing how to identify their training needs in order to adequately adapt and update their knowledge
  • Knowing how to use networking strategies and tools to favor a multidisciplinary approach in infants care for an appropriate achievement and maintenance of his psychophysical health and that of his family
  • Knowing how to manage your insertion into the world of work

Course Structure

Frontal lessons at the Department of Educational Science and attendance of clinics at the Pediatric Unit and Unit of Rare Diseases of the Nervous System in Pediatric Age, University Hospital "Policlinico Gaspare Rodolico S.Marco Hospital" University of Catania, Catania.

Frontal lessons will be done with the support of slides with texts, tables, drawings and images designed to explain pediatric physiology and pathology.

The clinics consist of pbservational activities at the Pediatric Unit and Unit of Rare Diseases of the Pediatric Age Nervous System" located at the University Hospital "Policlinico Gaspare Rodolico S,Marco Hospital" of the University of Catania

Detailed Course Content

Pediatrics is the discipline that deals with the promotion of well-being and health of children (i.e. as a dynamic condition of physical, mental and social well-being), and with the study (and prevention) of diseases in the subject in developmental age [that is, that period between the phases that precede the birth and the completion of the growth process which ends at the age of 16)]. In particular, this discipline deals with:

(a) physiology and development of the newborn (and hints of neonatal pathology), of the child and adolescent.

(b) preventive pediatrics, ie those activities that aim to reduce mortality due to a certain pathology or morbidity (ie the frequency of a certain disease) in the infant population;

(c) specialist pediatrics, that is, of all acute and chronic diseases affecting the various organs and systems during the developmental age: cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, neurology, hematology, oncology, endocrinology, rheumatology, infectious diseases, dermatology.

(d) social pediatrics, ie health / well-being problems inherent in more or less large communities of children (preventive community medicine).

Knowledge of the principles of Pediatrics is essential for all those who works in the fields of infancy and more generally of childhood and the related health problems associated with it.

During the course, elements regarding this branch of medicine will be provided regarding the state of health and care of children and adolescents. Wide-ranging issues are addressed such as the regular psychophysical development of the child, breastfeeding, growth and vaccinations and in more detail the diagnosis and treatment of the main childhood diseases.

To allow an adequate understanding of the regular development of the child and of the diseases, the lessons are organized in such a way as to provide in itinere the essential elements of anatomy and physiology of the various organs and systems, then illustrating the causes of the processes that lead to the state of disease in the child, the main clinical manifestations and the principles of treatment. In addition, some lessons will be specifically dedicated to the newborn (neonatal age includes the first 4 weeks of life) with reference to pregnancy, birth, neonatal care programs, suitable environmental conditions and stimulations with a view to preventive medicine and social.

Particular attention will be paid to the practical and current aspects of general Pediatrics in order to present good practices for correct management in the home environment and in educational contexts of various levels of both the healthy child and the sick child. The social impact of the various diseases of the child and / or disability conditions and finally the main consequences of acute and chronic complications and the general principles of therapy will also be emphasized.

The choice of topics focuses on the medical conditions that most frequently may present themselves to the attention of staff in contact with the world of childhood or which are most frequently mentioned, for various reasons, within the world of childhood. Furthermore, an in-depth study of the notions concerning nutritional principles, growth and development methods, not only physical, but also neurological, cognitive and behavioral, will be offered in the light of the current national and international orientations of the scientific discipline.
