Learning Objectives

1) Knowledge and understanding
• Knowing models and methodologies typical of the pediatric area, as well as the main neurological clinical pictures of children and adolescents to model educational and training events to the needs of the person who lives and / or attends communities of various type
• To know how to interpret and manage the relational and situational dynamics between the child / adolescent and her peers, parents and other family members in domestic, educational and community contexts
• To possess the knowledge to facilitate learning processes and cognitive processes in general in the child / adolescent with typical and atypical development, and/or with various forms of disability and/ or with behavioral disorders
• To know the principles of integrated management of interventions dedicated to the pediatric and adolescent age also in the field of child neurology, public health services and organizations (national health system, level I, II and III clinical centers) and private (private clinics, associations and communities) with a view to a multi-professional approach of increasing specialty complexity

2) Knowledge and applied understanding skills. Skills: application of knowledge
• To connect the theoretical and methodological contents learned to the interpretation of events that may affect and/or compromise the psychophysical health conditions of the child/adolescent, his behavior, his relationships or the environment in which he lives
• Knowing how to carry out research aimed at practical intervention through the use of national and international databases also in the bio-medical field (eg PubMed, Scopus, Google Schoolar, etc).
• Knowing how to intervene in the relational dynamics that have the child/adolescent living in the community as the protagonist, using methods and tools to manage situations that arise in educational practice
• Knowing how to monitor and evaluate the different developmental trajectories of the child (motor, language, sensory, relational and behavioral) and growth, knowing how to grasp the differences between the typical and atypical development of the child, complex clinical pictures and abnormal behaviors reactive to the context of life
• Knowing how to collaborate in the definition of organizational and public health policies concerning the complex world of children and adolescents with neuropsychiatric conditions who frequent communities of various kinds.
• To promote an effective integration between educational, social, cultural services and those in the pediatric-health area.

3) Autonomy of judgment. Skills: Synthesize and evaluate
• To critically evaluate the relevance of the theoretical contents studied with respect to what is observed in the child/adolescent or in his life contexts (eg community) in educational practice
• Knowing how to choose appropriate management and care methods and tools, taking into account the needs of the child/adolescent and their developmental stages, whether regular or not, and the environment in which they live
• Knowing how to organize and manage complex problems and information especially when the child/adolescent has a chronic disorder of high care complexity and lives in contexts of educational poverty and difficult parenting

4) Communication skills; Knowing how to communicate
• Knowing how to deal with interlocutors, specialists and other colleagues, within design interventions and various professional contexts
• Knowing how to draw up reports and protocols, be able to describe clinical cases, report with language properties what is observed in the child / adolescent or critical events occurred during educational practice interacting with parents, clinical specialists and other work colleagues.

5) Learning skills
• To improve skills to contribute to the development of projects also in the clinical setting
• Knowing how to identify one's training needs in order to adequately adapt and update one's knowledge
• Knowing how to use networking strategies and tools to favor a multidisciplinary approach in the care of the child / adolescent who frequents a community, in order to appropriately achieve and maintain his or her psychophysical health and that of his family
• Knowing how to manage one's own insertion into the world of work

Course Structure

Frontal lessons at the Department of Educational Science and attendance of clinics at the Pediatric Unit and Unit of Rare Diseases of the Nervous System in Pediatric Age, University Hospital "Policlinico Gaspare Rodolico S.Marco Hospital" University of Catania, Catania.

Frontal lessons will be done with the support of slides with texts, tables, drawings and images designed to explain pediatric physiology and pathology.

The clinics consist of pbservational activities at the Pediatric Unit and Unit of Rare Diseases of the Pediatric Age Nervous System" located at the University Hospital "Policlinico Gaspare Rodolico S,Marco Hospital" of the University of Catania

The following prerequisites represent the nodal point of the subject: It is essential to know the basics of embryology, anatomy and physiology (normal functioning) of the nervous system of the child and adolescent. This is essential in order to ANSWER the exam questions. Without this knowledge (which is provided during the course of lessons) you CANNOT take the exam
