Learning Objectives

The course aims to develop a general knowledge about the spreading of educational publishing in the contemporary age. Attention will be mainly focused on the origins of books for popular education, schoolbooks and children’s books in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries, proposing an analysis of the problems and conditions of children’s publishing in the contemporary cultural context.


Detailed Course Content

The condition of popular educational books and school-books, the publishing system and educational praxis in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries and their patterns and dynamics of development; Educational writings and models of popular education: cultural traditions and ideological references; Educational and school publishing and the education of Italian people after the Unification of Italy; Cultural production, publishing system and problems of Southern Italy between the Nineteenth and Twentieth century. Publishers, books and children’s literature in the contemporary cultural context.
