Learning Objectives

The aim of the course is to

  • to illustrate the salient moments of the history of Rome;
  • to encourage a correct approach to the use of literary, epigraphic, papyrological, archaeological and numismatic sources;
  • to present the most important theories of modern scholars on the main themes of the history of Rome;
  • provide tools and techniques for the study and processing of historical data;
  • to stimulate, through interactive lessons, individual research, group work and in progress tests, the development of critical and judgement skills in the field of historical processes.

Detailed Course Content

Origins of Rome and the monarchic age; social, political and economic structure of the Republic; Rome’s expansion into Italy and the Mediterranean; the crisis of the Roman Republic and the rise of personal power; social, political and economic structure of the Principate; the crisis of the Third Century; the Dominate; the rise of Christianity; the fall of the Western Roman empire.
