Learning Objectives

Comparative education is a research discipline that tends to identify new, theoretical and practical knowledge, by comparing two or more educational systems in use in different countries, in different regions, in different historical periods. Because of the assumption of comparative studies - according to which we can truly understand ourselves only in the context of an authentic knowledge of other societies - in order to make the pedagogical discourse more penetrating and documented, we can summarize the main objectives of this discipline. (in both research and study): identifying what is happening in other places in order to improve one's educational system; in describing similarities and differences in educational phenomena that can be detected in different systems and interpret the reasons for such differences / affinities; analyzing the variables considered crucial for the results achieved in one or more educational systems.

Detailed Course Content

Historical reconstruction of the origins, the main methodological orientations and the developments of comparative Education through a perspective of the relationship with the other and of the dialectic unity / diversity. General contents will concern: globalization and citizenship, comparative education and globalization processes; paths of global citizenship; history and comparison of the European educational and training policies; international educational organizations (UNESCO-OECD-Council of Europe, etc.); intercultural issues, comparative education and perspectives in the Mediterranean. The theme of the historical process of European cultural unification and the history of its unitary project, as complementary to the democratic formation of the citizen of Europe, will be special content.
