Learning Objectives

Pediatrics is the discipline that deals with the promotion of health (intended as a dynamic condition of physical, mental and social well-being), and with the study (and prevention) of diseases in children and adolescents [ie, that period between the phases that precede the birth and the completion of the process of statural growth that ends at the age of about 16).

In particular, this discipline includes:

(a) physiology and development of the newborn (and signs of neonatal pathology), of children and adolescents.

(b) preventive pediatrics, ie those activities that aim to reduce mortality due to a certain pathology or morbidity (ie the frequency of a specific disease) in the infant population;

(c) specialist pediatrics, that is, all acute and chronic pathologies affecting the various organs and systems during developmental age: cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, neurology, hematology, oncology, endocrinology, rheumatology, infectious diseases, dermatology.

(d) social pediatrics, that is, health / wellness problems concerning more or less large communities of children (community preventive medicine).

The knowledge of the principles of Pediatrics is fundamental for all those who are in contact with the world of children and adolescents and more generally with the world of youth and with the related health problems related to it.

This course aims to provide the basics of: (a) the anatomy and physiology of the child in the various age groups; (b) preventive and social medicine in the age of development; (c) health education and understanding of the main pathologies affecting the pediatric and adolescent ages and of the different acute and chronic conditions, invalidating or not on the physical level, which have important implications on the evolutionary processes of the child and his learning abilities
