The course aims to promote knowledge of the evolution of theoretical models of reference and the dynamics of the functioning of political and educational institutions, with a focus on modern and contemporary history. After dealing with the concepts of ‘institution’ and ‘total institution’ from multiple points of view, the course will focus on the analysis of the themes of democracy, citizenship and rights in the Western political tradition, dwelling in particular on the right to study, focusing on the diachronic analysis of some exemplary cases from school to university, examining their functioning in close relation to the cultural contexts that produced them.
It also aims at fostering in students the ability to make connections and comparisons, critically and autonomously, through the reading and interpretation of sources according to the methodology and new orientations of historiographic research.

Course Structure
The course provides 36 lecture hours (6 cfu) taught in classroom presence by frontal lectures and group research work carried out in the classroom and independently. Visits to the city and archives are also planned.

Basic knowledge of the main themes and periodisation of early modern and contemporary history

Detailed Course Content
The course has a general character and is structured in two parts.
In the first, it will offer a critical analysis of the processes that led to the birth and affirmation of the various forms of political power in the West between the early modern and contemporary ages.
In the second part it will focus on the analysis of some junctures and particular institutional events concerning the Italian case and specifically the Sicilian case, with attention to both the political and educational dimensions, followed in their historical evolution up to contemporary forms.
