Course Description
This course aims to develop students’ general English proficiency from A2 to B1 level, with a specific focus on communication in tourism and hospitality contexts.
The course emphasises the development of communicative competence, including spoken interaction, professional writing, and the use of domain-specific vocabulary relevant to the tourism industry.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
• interact in routine tourism-related situations using appropriate language
• understand and use B1-level grammatical structures with reasonable accuracy
• employ tourism-specific vocabulary in context
• produce short, structured professional texts (e.g. emails, descriptions, reports)
• deliver short oral presentations on tourism-related topics
Teaching Methods
The course adopts a communicative approach and includes:
• lectures
• pair and group work
• role plays and simulations
• guided writing tasks
• oral presentations
Assessment
Students’ performance will be assessed through:
• Written examination: grammar, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing tasks
• Oral examination: interaction in tourism-related contexts and short presentation of a torism-related topic. Language of Instruction

Weekly Syllabus (9 Weeks – 54 Contact Hours)
🔹 Week 1 (6 hours)
Language Review and Consolidation
Focus: Basic communication and language awareness
• Introducing oneself and exchanging personal information
• Functional language: greetings, thanking, apologising, requesting, telling the date and time, apologising• Alphabet and spelling
• Common pronunciation issues for Italian learners
• False friends and common false use of English words
• Producing simple professional and personal ral and written emails
🔹 Week 2 (6 hours)
Introduction to Tourism
Vocabulary:
• job-related adjectives
• tourism sectors
• job routines
Skills and Tasks:
• discussing job skills and responsibilities
• reading: Tourism: the biggest industry in the world
• writing: producing a fact sheet
🔹 Week 3 (6 hours)
Accommodation and Hospitality
Vocabulary:
• types of accommodation
• services and facilities
• descriptive language
Skills and Tasks:
• handling telephone bookings
• providing information about accommodation
• writing: structured descriptions of hotels and accommodation
• reading: What makes a good hotel?

Travel Agencies and Customer Interaction
Vocabulary:
• sales and customer service terminology
Skills and Tasks:
• identifying clients’ needs
• telephone interaction in travel agencies
• discussing online booking platforms (e.g. Booking.com)
• writing: professional emails and short reports
• reading: The sales process

Airport Operations
Vocabulary:
• airport facilities and services
Skills and Tasks:
• interaction at check-in and information desks
• managing passenger communication
• writing: airport fact file
• reading: Working in airports
🔹 Week 6 (6 hours)
The Airline Industry
Vocabulary:
• air travel terminology
• low-cost carriers
• giving directions
Skills and Tasks:
• comparing low-cost and traditional airlines
• writing: designing questionnaires
• reading: Tourism and air travel
🔹 Week 7 (6 hours)
Sicily: Cultural and Heritage Tourism
Vocabulary:
• historical and cultural tourism terminology
Skills and Tasks:
• describing tourist destinations and heritage sites
• promoting local tourism in English
• writing: structured descriptions of tourist destinations in Sicily
• reading: texts on cultural tourism

Art and Tourism

• describing artworks and exhibitions
• Writing: descriptive texts on works of art
• Reading: texts on art galleries and cultural spaces

Revision and Assessment Preparation
