Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide a basic knowledge of Italian and European Art History, from the Early Christian age to the first half of the 15th century.

At the end of the course student will be able: 

- to describe works of art and their iconographic, technical and stylistic characteristics;

- to place works of art in their historical, geographical, religious and cultural context;

- to elaborate personal analysis by using a specific and appropriate terminology.

A special focus will be set on Medieval art in Sicily

Architecture, painting, sculpture, book illumination and applied arts from the Early Christian age to the first half of the 15th century in Italy and in Europe, in relation with patronage, society and liturgical needs
