Expected Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide basic knowledge of the debate on Christian and medieval archaeology and the main problems of archaeological research. Medieval archaeology and the main problems of archaeological research; to reflect on the methods of construction of the archaeological source and the complexity of the processes of historical reconstruction starting the use of archaeological sources in comparison with documentary sources. With particular reference to Sicily knowledge of the acculturation processes from the Byzantine to the Swabian age and of some
archaeological sites and monumental complexes of particular relevance to measure the extent of these processes.

Course Structure

Frontal teaching

Required Prerequisites

Knowledge of historical and geographical coordinates relating to the two reference periods of the course, the Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. It is therefore advisable to approach the study of the subject after having passed the examinations of Roman history and medieval history, in view of the fact that the historical issues of the period are constantly referred to within the course.
