Module TOURIST ENHANCEMENT OF GEOSITES, GEOPARKS AND MINERAL PARKS

Expected Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge and Understanding Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• Know and understand the concepts of geodiversity, geosite, Geopark, and Mining Park, as well as the scientific, environmental, historical, and cultural value of geological and mining heritage;

• Understand the relationships between geological heritage, georesources, human activities, and sustainable regional development;

• Know the main aspects of legislation regarding Parks, Geoparks, and Mining Parks, alongside the procedures for establishing and managing these areas;

• Know the historical evolution of mining activities and their role in the transformation of the territory and landscape.

2. Applying Knowledge and Understanding Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• Recognize and analyze geological, environmental, historical, and cultural elements relevant to the enhancement of geological and mining heritage;

• Apply acquired knowledge to the design of a Geopark or Mining Park, considering geological, spatial, regulatory, cultural, and sustainability aspects;

• Develop proposals for the enhancement and enjoyment of geological and mining heritage, including the creation of geological-cultural itineraries;

• Evaluate methods for the sustainable use of the territory, taking into account the concept of carrying capacity.

3. Making Judgements Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• Critically evaluate the characteristics and potential of a territory for its possible enhancement as a Geopark or Mining Park;

• Identify the geological, environmental, historical, and cultural elements to consider when planning protection, recovery, and enhancement interventions;

• Formulate well-founded proposals for the sustainable management and enjoyment of geo-mining heritage based on available information.

4. Communication Skills Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• Clearly and effectively communicate the characteristics and value of geological and mining heritage to both specialist and non-specialist audiences;

• Present and discuss a Geopark or Mining Park project, illustrating its goals, features, and methods of enhancement and public enjoyment;

• Work effectively in a multidisciplinary context, integrating geological, environmental, historical, and cultural aspects;

• Utilize various communication and outreach tools, including the preparation of cultural itineraries and educational materials.

5. Learning Skills Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

• Independently locate and consult scientific literature, technical documentation, databases, and regulatory references related to geosites, Geoparks, and Mining Parks;

• Critically use collected information to study case studies in depth and independently develop proposals for the protection, enhancement, and enjoyment of geological and mining heritage.
