Philosophy and Education in Classical Antiquity

Academic Year 2022/2023 - Teacher: Rosa Loredana CARDULLO

Expected Learning Outcomes

Course title 2021/2022: Soul, Ideas, Man's Destiny in Plato's Phaedo

The course Philosophy and the Formation of Man in Antiquity 2022/2023 is aimed at an in-depth study of Plato's thought through a critical study and reading of one of the philosopher's most fascinating dialogues.

The student, who has already acquired a basic knowledge of the History of Philosophy in the three-year course, will have the opportunity to delve into the thought of one of the most important and decisive philosophers in the entire history of philosophy, Plato, and will also learn to read an ancient philosophical text.

Another important objective of teaching Philosophy and the Formation of Man in Antiquity is to enable students wishing to choose the professional outlet of higher education to acquire the credits and prerequisites required for participation in the A18 and A19 class competitions.

Course Structure

The teaching will be divided into two distinct but interconnected moments.

I. The first part, dedicated to the historical-theoretical exposition of Platonic thought, will take place through some frontal lectures held by the lecturer and a seminar activity held by PhD students Myriam Lazzaro and Nunziatina Sanfilippo. The aim of this first part of the course is to teach students to:

1. frame Platonic thought within the history of ancient philosophy

2. link Plato to his teacher Socrates and distinguish their often intertwined thoughts

3. analyse the innovative contribution of Platonic thought and its influence on the entire history of later philosophy

4. Focus on the most important Platonic doctrines

5. verify the topicality of Platonic thought by following the contemporary debate.

In the second or monographic part, the Platonic dialogue of the Phaedon will be read and commented on in the classroom, in an edition recommended by the lecturer, edited by Franco Trabattoni, one of the major Italian Platonists, together with Franco Ferrari, editor of the critical text indicated in point I. The student will find in it many of the theories characteristic of Plato's mature phase.

Required Prerequisites

A knowledge, even minimal, of the history of ancient philosophy is required.

The student who approaches this discipline has already acquired a knowledge - albeit approximate - of the themes, theories and protagonists of ancient philosophy during the three-year university course and, in most cases, also during the high school curriculum. He therefore already has an idea of the path he will take and the requirements he possesses will be more than sufficient to adequately tackle the study of the discipline.

Attendance of Lessons

Attendance is recommended, especially for those students who feel they have not acquired (for a variety of reasons) a good philosophical education or who generally have difficulties with this discipline.
