Salvatore ALEO

Full Professor of CRIMINAL LAW [IUS/17]

Born in Catania, 3.7.1953, graduated with honors in Law in 1975 at University of Catania, where he is full professor of penal law and criminology. He is also Director of degree course in Sciences of administration and organization. 

Salvatore Aleo, born in Catania in 1953, is full professor in Penal law (IUS/17) at the University of Catania, where he teaches Penal law and Criminology in the Department of political and social sciences and in the Department of Educational sciences (degree in Psicology). He is president of the degree course in Sciences of administration and organization.

He is a member of the steering committee of the Penitentiary and criminological review (since 2002), member of the scientific committee of The penal index (from 2012), of the Italian journal of public communication (from 2001) and of the Sicilian center of studies on justice (Palermo, since 2007).

He is co-editor (with S. Di Nuovo) of Law and Society, published by Bonanno, which is a series of criminology and forensic psycology.

Since 2009 he is member of the scientific committee of the multidisciplinary course in Education for development and rights (developed by UNICEF and University of Catania).

From 2013 he is a member of the Governing council of the Surgeon and Citizen Foundation.

From 2003 to 2009 he was director of the Department of Political Studies at the University of Catania and co-editor (with G. Barone) of the Notebooks of the Department of Political Studies.

From 2009 to 2011 he was chairman of the Interdepartmental centre of library services of the Faculty of Political Sciences at the University of Catania.

From 2005 to 2010 he was coordinator of the PhD in “Protection of human rights” of the University of Catania.

In 2007-2008 he was coordinator of the second level master of the University of Catania in “Criminological Sciences and prison”, carried out jointly and in cooperation with the Office of the Supervisor for the protection of the rights of prisoners of the Sicilian Region.

In the academic year 2009-2010 he was coordinator of the second level master of the University of Catania in “Criminology”.

In 2012-13 he was coordinator of the second level master of the University of Catania in “Criminology” which was held in Caltanissetta in agreement with the University Consortium Nyssa.

He was member of the Scientific committee of the  International Institute of Higher Studies in Criminal Sciences (ISISC – Syracuse, 2001-2006) and of the Permanent Observatory on Organized Crime (OPCO – Syracuse, 2002-2008).

In 2002-2003 he was member of the Commission for the reform of the Criminal Code appointed by the Minister of Justice Castelli and chaired by Dr. Nordio.

From 2006 to 2015 he taught Criminological science and models of fight against criminal organizations in the Course of advanced training of the School for the police forces of the Department of Public Security of the Ministry of the Interior, based in Rome. From 2011 to 2015 he was a member the Governing council of the school.

In the years 2010-2014 he held study meetings on accountability in the health sector with national and regional steering of FESMED (Board of Managers Doctors Federation), ACOI (Italian Association of Hospital Surgeons), AOGOI (Italian Association of Hospital Obstetricians and Gynaecologists) and SMI (Italian Doctors’ Union).

He studied particularly the theory of liability, organized crime and the theory of criminal organizations, the problems of definition and reasoning about liability, the limits of causality and the contributions of functionalist analysis into the issue of complexity, the profiles of the responsibilities and problems related to the exercise of medical activities, the crisis of the notions of responsibility and the relationship between imputability, criminal responsibility and social dangerousness.

He is interested in studying the topics of penal responsability, in particular referred to complex organizations. He has studied the dynamics of organized criminality, the limits connected to the theory of causality and the contribution of functional analys. He is also interested in defining the limits of medical responsability.
