Silvana RAFFAELE

Full Professor of MODERN HISTORY [M-STO/02]

Professor Silvana Raffaele, born in Catania on 1-1-1948, after completing her classical education at the high school administration, "Mario Cutelli" in Catania, she graduated in Arts (Lettere moderne) at the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, University of Catania on 6/23/1970, bringing the score of 110/110 and honors.

Since 2007 she is professor (professore ordinario) of modern history.

Effective legal and economic 10.1.2001 was appointed associated professor in the scientific-disciplinary M02A (Modern History), Faculty of Scienze della Formazione, University of Catania, and confirmed in that role from 1-10-2004, was reclassified - Former DM 10.04.2000 - in the scientific-disciplinary M-STO/02 (Modern History).

From 1980 to 1-10-2003 was a member of the Department of "Human Sciences", University of Catania.

Since 1-11-2003 belongs to the Department of "Processi formativi" at the same University of Catania.

Since 1971 she has served continuously in the Faculty of Scienze della Formazione.

 

- Tutor: A.A. 1971-72;

- The holder of a tutor of research and refinement for young graduates from 1-1-1973, renewed on 1-1-1974 to 10.31.1974;

- The holder of a check every two years of scientific training and teaching art. 6 of Law 766/73, assigned to the group of historical disciplines, from 1-11-1974 to 11.30.1976;

- Owner of a four-year contract under Law 766/1973, for the group of historical disciplines, from 1-12-1976 to 11.17.1981;

  - Researcher from 1-8-1980 for legal and 11/18/1981 and until 09/30/2001 for economic purposes. In this status she was classified - art. 15 of Law 11.19.1990, n. 341 - in s.s.d. M02A Modern History and reclassified - Former Ministerial Decree 10/04/2000 - in s.s.d. M-STO/02 of the same name.

Professor Raffaele has always fulfilled its obligations relating to its institutional role playing regular lessons, participating in the commission of examinations, as president and as member and as an alternate to other committees as required of the faculty.

She has participated regularly in commissions for the examinations as a graduation speaker of numerous thesis and as co-rapporteur.

From the A. A. 1979-1980 to 1991-1992 she has also carried out regular teaching and collaboration in the chair of Modern History at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Catania.

She has also conducted within the Faculty of Education all activities related to the project of "Encouraging education" through lectures and tests in progress, and promoting meetings between students and professors from other Italian universities.

She organized, with lectures, the "Zero Course".

She held some workshops within the project "Video Library" activated by the Faculty.

She held 240 hours of "mentoring" for students in the A.A. 2002-2003 and 2003-2004, and 70 hours in the A. A. 2005-2006.

In the years 2007-2009 she was responsible for the cultural activities of the Faculty with the project "The educational community."

She also participated to Degree Course Councils, Faculty Councils, Department Councils.

She was a member of the Commission "Socrates Erasmus" of the Faculty and of the “Commissione Locali".

She was a member of the "didactic commission" and "internship commission" in Piazza Armerina (EN).

She was a member of various committees relating to internal competitions of the Faculty.

She has taught courses for the formation of "tutors", organized in 1996/97 from the Faculty of Education, in Enna, Giarre and Ragusa-Modica.

Professor Raffaele has played 30 hours of educational activities within the "course of competition training teacher in the schools" for the class 37 / A organized by COF University of Catania (1998-99).

In 2003-2004 she was a teacher in the Equal Community Initiative Programme. Axis I Employability, and more specifically, in the project "Action for the development of social integration of immigrants Training Course in "Cultural Mediators", taking lectures on "Economics and policies of the Mediterranean".

From 2004 to 2008 she was Professor of Modern History at the degree of “Beni culturali”, Kore University (Enna).

From October 2001 to date she has been a member of the faculty of the PHD in "HISTORY OF MEDITERRANEAN EUROPE FROM ANTIQUITY TO MODERN AGE", by conducting regular lectures and tutors.

It was external tutor at PHD of "Modern History" of the Faculty of Arts, University of Catania.

It was also external tutor at PHD in "HUMANITIES" of the Faculty of Education, University of Catania.

In April 2005 she was a member of the Commission for the Ph.D. in "POPULATION, FAMILY AND TERRITORY (HISTORICAL DEMOGRAPHY)" - XVII cycle at the Department of "historical and geographical sciences", University of Bari.

In October 2005 she was a member of the Commission for the a research grant in "MODERN SOCIETY AND LAND IN SICILY (XVIII-XIX CENTURY)", organized by the Faculty of Education for the s.s.d. M-STO / 02.

She was President of the Commission of examinations for admission to the Ph.D. "HUMANITIES" of the Faculty of Education, University of Catania in 2007-08.

In 2009 she took part in the Commission's confirmation of Luciano Pezzolo as associate professor, University Ca 'Foscari, Venice.

She was responsible for the organizing committee of the "Job 2011", in Catania (14-16 December 2011).

She is a member of the Directors of the Institute for the History of Italian Risorgimento, in Catania.

She is a member of the Board and the Scientific Foundation of the "New South".

- She's been several times in teacher training courses for teachers of middle school and high school (Catania, 1997; San Giovanni La Punta, 1999, Catania, 1998, 1999, Grosseto, 1998, Acireale, 2000).

- Within Community programs she has been teaching courses for the formation of "Tour Operators" (Zafferana 1995/1996) and "Guardians of museum” (Catania 1996/1997). Within the Project N.O.S.S.TER. (N. 2675/E2/I/R) she has taught courses for the formation of "Tourism" and "Touristic Guide".

- She was also a professor in the IFTS COURSES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT AND USE OF HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL HERITAGE, taking lessons on the History of Sicily:

- At the Higher Institute "G. Russian "Paterno of the year 2002-2003, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, 2008-2009.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

 

In her scientific work she has focused, in addition to the deepening of the institutional foundations of modern history and methodology of historical research, issues related to social history and political institutions of the South, with particular attention to the historical demography, activity-regulatory legislative eighteenth-nineteenth century, family structures, education and medical education in conjunction with the power relations of the city. The scientific interests of Prof. Raffaele have also focused on the analysis of education policy, the training and social dynamics in southern Bourbon.

Recently she analyzed the family strategies and property in modern Sicily concentrating the interest on the fate of younger daughters, and in particular on forced nuns.

Within these research programs she has continuously participated in the

projects MIUR (ex 60%) obtaining regular funding.

She's been, for several times, local coordinator of the projects MIUR (ex 40%) in collaboration with other universities (Bari and Florence).

In the period 2001-2003 she took part to project about law and society in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies.

In 2003-2005 she was the coordinator of the Education Project of the University and society in Bourbon Sicily.

She was coordinator for the University of Catania of the Local Unit COFIN “Use and reinvention of the old policy in the modern age (XVI-XIX century)”, national coordinator Professor Franco Benigno, in collaboration with the University of Teramo, Naples, Salerno, Basilicata, and Milan.

She attended the University Project, 2007, entitled: “Culture and repression from the sixteenth to the twentieth century: canon law, repression, the texts banned, the screen censored”; she is responsible.

She is currently Project Manager of the University, in 2008, entitled: “Power, countervailing and transgression of censorship paths between the modern and contemporary age”.

"Progetto di Ricerca Nazionale", year 2009, entitled Il modello fisiocratico: economia e politica di un progetto liberale. Coordinator: professor Antonino De Francesco; responsable: professor Enrico Iachello.

She was coordinator of the research group of "Medicine" concerning the project on the theme: “Tradition and renewal in the scientific culture in Sicily between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries”, headed by prof. Domenico Ligresti.

In collaboration with the ORDER OF PSYCHOLOGISTS SICILIAN REGION attended the meeting-debate with a report on female identity between professional and private (Catania, 1999).

She was speaker at the conference on Women in the Mediterranean held in St. Teresa Riva (ME) in June 2002, during the meeting lounges and role of women in Italy between the late seventeenth century and first organized in January 2003 by the University of Milan, in the SECOND MEETING OF STUDIES ON “Sicilianess: Anthropological and ethnographic aspects” organized by section Acireale SiciliAntica (December 13, 2003) with an intervention of History and Material Culture, and in conference “Vices temporum” (Bronte, 2004).

She gave a talk in the INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “The price of life: welfare system, social nets and economic growth” (Catania, 2005).

She was speaker in the final conference of the Cofin (Teramo, 18-19 May 2006).

She was speaker at the conference organized by the Faculty of Education, University of Catania (Piazza Armerina, May 29, 2006).

She took part as a speaker at the conference on The South of Italy in the Napoleonic era, held in Potenza (7-9 May 2007), with a report titled Politics and Society in the French decade: the training, discussed with the Dr. Elena Frasca.

She took part to the conference about studies of Franciscan and culture in Catania, held in Catania on 21 and 22 December 2007, presenting a report titled "To console my wounded heart: stories of nuns in modern Catania”, discussed with Dr. Elena Frasca and Dr. Alessandra Greco.

She participated at the conference organized by the Italian embassy in Tunis on “Garibaldi and Tunis” in 2008 with a report on “Giuseppe Garibaldi: a training course”.

She was also speaker of the round table conference in Bari, in 2009, with a speech entitled “Family and inheritance: wedding gifts and spiritual gifts in modern Sicily”.

She participated at a conference organized by the Society of Historical Demography, entitled “Demography and diversity: convergences and divergences”, Napoli 5-7 November 2009, with a report entitled “Family dynamics in modern Sicily: monks, nuns, knights, and 'married'”.

She attended the national conference organized by the ANDOS in February 2010 in Catania with a report entitled “A saint for the city. Sociological and historical significance of the cult of St. Agatha in Catania”.

She was speaker at the first residential course entitled “Interdisciplinary Sleep disorders in childhood. Prevention and education: from physiology to pathology and genetics”, Catania, 10-11 September 2010, with a report entitled “Between sleep and dream of the real and the imaginary”.

She was a speaker at the conference for the 150th anniversary of the unification of Catania, sponsored by the Institute for the History of the Italian Risorgimento, the Committee of Catania, held in Bronte and Catania on 29 and 30 November 2010, with a report about “Giuseppe Garibaldi”.

She was speaker in the AATI Annual Conference, The Sicilian session, held in Erice on days 25 to 30 May 2011, with a report titled “Women and knowledge in Bourbon Italy” discussed with Dr. Elena Frasca.

She presented, on 8 July 2011, her volume "Aut virum, aut Murum. Strategic marriages, divorces seraphic and mystical wedding in modern Sicily” during the "EMUNI Summer School", organized by the Faculty of Education of Catania.

She participated as a moderator at the conference entitled “History of paediatrics and child forever. 1. Prehistory, Early History and Ancient Civilizations”, held in Catania, September 10, 2011.

She was a speaker at the study seminar titled “Historical, social, economic problems of migration, which took place in Catania on 28-29 November 2011, with a speech on “Immigration and Integration in the history of the Mediterranean. The case of Sicily”.

She took part in on “Filippo Liardo 1834-1917: painter of history, stain and impression”, held in Catania on December 1, 2011, with a report titled “Filippo Liardo, the painter in a red shirt”.

ORGANIZATION OF CONFERENCES AND SEMINARS

 

In collaboration with the Cultural Department of the CITY OF CATANIA she organized in 1991, a conference on Cultural Heritage and Library. Role, functions, initiatives.

At the invitation of the TOWN OF TREMESTIERI ETNEO she has made a day of Pictures of past and present (Tremestieri Etneo, 1991).

In 1992 she organized a seminar on the History of the Family at the FACULTY OF POLITICAL SCIENCE UNIVERSITY OF PALERMO.

In June 1999, at the invitation of the INSTITUTE OF ITALIAN CULTURE she has created, at the ITALIAN CONSULATE OF ALGIERS, a conference-seminar on Bourbon Sicily.

She collaborated on the course of Byzantine and medieval archeology SiciliAntica (Catania, 1995) which has been repeatedly speaker.

For PROGRAM OF INNOVATION RURAL COMMUNITY LEADER II she has collaborated, in 1999, at the creation of the Museum of “Sfilato” at the town of Chiaramonte Gulfi.

During the opening ceremony of the A.A. 1999/2000 organized in Catania the exhibition-seminar: “The place of women in the nineteenth century Catania”.

In April 1999 she collaborated on the premises of the Faculty, a study day on the Mafia phenomenon, and education law.

For the ITALIAN ENVIRONMENT FUND (FAI) she organized in March 1999, THE DAY OF SPRING VII on the theme: “The walls of Charles V”.

In synergy with the DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO THE CITY OF CATANIA, she has worked to show the doctors and medicine in Catania between the fifteenth and early twentieth century (Catania, 2001), and the seminar which was also speaker.

She collaborated on the study days - Meetings seminars organized by the PHD IN "HISTORY OF EUROPE MEDITERRANEAN ANTIQUITY CONTEMPORARY AGE" in Catania in November of 2002, which was also speaker.

In collaboration with the Province of Ragusa and the PHD IN "HISTORY OF EUROPE MEDITERRANEAN ANTIQUITY MODERN AGE" she has organized the International Symposium on The signs of memory. Institutions, Society, Territory (Donnafugata, Modica, Ragusa Ibla, 1-4 October 2003) that hosted scholars of national and international level and where was the speaker.

She has organized several seminars on the theme “Families and without a family” for several associations and cultural organizations.

She attended the Seminary of the West and Islam, organized by the Liceo Classico "N. Spedalieri "of Catania in May 2003 with a report of fortresses and strongholds in Catania of Charles V.

For Mondoperaio she has made the study day on “Giuseppe De Felice Giuffrida and democratic reform in Catania”, where she was speaker (Catania, 2005).

She has designed, organized and supervised the construction of the exhibition of historical and iconographic points Trigona. A project of cultural tourism for the degree course in "Training of Tour Operators" in Piazza Armerina (Piazza Armerina, 2005).

She organized, in February 2006, on behalf of the Italian Embassy in Paris the conference on S. Agata: “History of an urban identity”.

In collaboration with the Municipality of Catania has participated in the "Culture Week" September 7, 2008 with a seminar-concert entitled “Walking in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century Catania: knowledge and virtue”.

On the occasion of the 150 Unity of Italy she has organized several seminars on the theme 150 years from the Unification of Italy: “Facts and reflections”.

For the city of Catania she has created some touristic signboards for historical buildings (2012).

Silvana Raffaele is Full Professor of Modern History at the Department of Education of the University of Catania.

Specialist of the Bourbon period, she ha studied the welfare policy, th historical demography, the analysis of family structures, the history of academic and university and the education .

Her latest book focuses on the theme of "female" feudalism and, in particular, on the phenomenon of forced nuns in the modern age.

She has devised, for the city of Catania, the project; "Catania e i suoi palazzi. Il recupero della memoria", in collaboration with the University, the Department of Culture of the Municipality of Catania, creating historical and touristic tables
